So what is a “Lobster Pound”? The short answer is a place where lobsters are kept in tanks through which sea water is piped to nourish the lobsters therein. Records say the first Lobster Pound was constructed in a tidal creek in Vinalhaven, Maine in 1875.
The Cape Neddick Lobster Pound restaurant was established in 1959; a venture conjured up by a couple guys in college, looking for a fun summer job and a way to pay for school.
The one room “Pound” was a hit with the locals, and tourists
alike. The diners enjoyed our “fresh off-the-boat” lobster, which they ate off
the picnic tables over-looking the harbor. As York grew as a town, and popular
vacation destination, so did The Pound. Throughout the years the business grew
along with the crowds, dining rooms and bars were added, menus were expanded,
and great fun was had along the way. To reflect these changes we added "Harborside Restaurant" to our name (ask any local for The Pound in Cape Neddick and they'll know where to send you).
What hasn’t changed? The salt-water tanks
remain and provide the same locally trapped, “fresh off-the-boat lobster” and we are still
having fun.
Prior
to 1959, there are stories, local legends, which chronicle
a long, colorful and some may say, unbelievable history of Cape Neddick and the
structure that is The Cape Neddick Lobster Pound. Read one of the “Local Legends” here .
